About the Project
Rising health care costs are a major challenge nationwide, and evidence is emerging that cross-market systems are able to increase prices because of system power resulting from greater bargaining leverage across markets. The purpose of the project is to understand the mechanisms that cross-market health systems may be using to exert market power, to develop new measures to quantify competition among cross-market hospital systems, to provide economic evidence of the effects of cross-market systems acquiring physician organizations, and to develop a legal framework to successfully challenge health system mergers and acquisitions that harm competition. To conduct this study, the Petris Center is partnering with The Source on Healthcare Price & Competition at University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, and Catalyst for Payment Reform.
